What This Product Is Not

  • It is not a complete impression kit. It does not include trays, instructions or a return envelope. If you need those, order the full dental impression kit.
  • It is not a substitute for a professional dental assessment. Impression putty captures a mould, it does not diagnose or treat any dental condition.
  • It is not a retainer. It is the material used to take the mould your retainer is made from.

Dental Impression Putty Questions Answered

What is dental impression putty made of?
Our dental impression putty is a two-part vinyl polysiloxane (VPS) silicone, the same dental-grade, BPA-free material dentists use to take moulds. You mix a base (purple) with a catalyst (white) until the colour is uniform, then press it into an impression tray to capture an accurate mould of your teeth.
Is this the same as your dental impression kit?
No. This is spare putty on its own, for people who already have an impression tray and just need more material to retake a mould. If you are ordering retainers or taking impressions for the first time, you need the full dental impression kit, which includes upper and lower trays, putty, illustrated instructions and a prepaid return envelope.
How much impression putty do I need?
One pair (25g base plus 25g catalyst) is enough for a single arch impression, so a pair covers one upper or one lower mould. If you want to impression both arches, or expect to need more than one attempt, choose two or more pairs.
Is dental impression putty safe to use in the mouth?
Yes. It is dental-grade, non-toxic and BPA-free, and is designed for short-term oral use while you take an impression. It sets firm and is removed in one piece. It is not chewed or swallowed, and any excess is easy to trim away before you take your mould.
How long does the putty take to set?
Once the base and catalyst are mixed, you have roughly one minute of working time to load the tray, then you bite down and hold steady for about three to four minutes while it sets. Warmer hands and rooms speed the set up slightly, so mix promptly and work quickly.
Can I use this putty with any impression tray?
Yes. The putty works with any standard dental impression tray, including the trays supplied in our impression kit. It is sold as a refill material only and does not include a tray.
How should I store dental impression putty?
Keep the base and catalyst sealed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight until you are ready to use them. Stored unopened, the material stays usable for a long time, so it is worth keeping a spare pair on hand in case you ever need to retake a mould.
